Acidophilus and Bifidus

Holistic Horsekeeping Newsletter, December 2022, Volume 27, Number 12 Dr. Madalyn Ward – How to have a healthy happy horse

Acidophilus and Bifidus – I have trusted these probiotics for over 30 years. They are both prepared in a way that helps them survive in the gut. An acidophilus capsule contains 5 billion CFUs and Bifidus has 3 billion CFUs. This is important because colony forming units means there are high enough numbers to establish in the gut and displace less desirable bacteria.

I consider these products to be therapeutic because I see many conditions improve when they are added to a person’s or horse’s diet. Actually any animal can benefit. So many conditions seen on the outside of the body have their origin in the gut. Examples include frequent infections from a weakened immune system, chronic allergies, skin conditions from a toxic state in the gut, weight gain or loss, frequent injuries or weakness in tendons and ligaments, digestive upset, emotional imbalance and many more.

1 capsule of each of these probiotics is included in each Essentials packet. You also get a capsule of the Mind algae, Body algae and a digestive enzyme. This is a great way to start if there are no serious health challenges. If there are more advanced issues then I suggest starting with a loading amount of 6 acidophilus in the morning and 6 bifidus at night. This amount is for people and horses. Lower doses can be used for small animals.

The loading level of acidophilus and bifidus may be continued for several months or until symptoms improve. It takes time for the gut to heal so be patient. Once things are better then gradually decrease to the maintenance amount of 1 of each a day. Or shift then to Essentials Blend powder taken at the rate of 1 tsp and day for people and horses or Spectrabiotic 1 to 3 capsules a day. Essentials Blend and Spectrabiotic still contain CFUs but the numbers are lower and more strains of bacteria are included.

When taking these types of potent probiotics it is not unusual to have some mild shifts in gut function. This is normal as the gut flora is shifting to the better. I am always available to help with any questions.
