Holistic Horse Health: Can Your Horse Benefit from Nitric Oxide?
Madalyn with horseFor many years now I have been using a line of products and carrying them in my online store, from Equine Science Solutions, which are designed to help the body produce adequate levels of Nitric Oxide. I have looked into what Nitric Oxide is and what it does. It is a very interesting compound.

About Nitric Oxide
Nitric Oxide is neither a mineral nor a vitamin, but a biological gas that
is produced within the body and assists in a variety of physiological
functions.

Symbolized as ‘NO’, NITRIC OXIDE contains one atom of Nitrogen and one
of Oxygen. It is produced when enzymes in the body break down the amino
acid Arginine, and is mainly used for intra-cellular communication.

Nitric Oxide is required for key physiological functions within our bodies.
It travels freely from one cell to another assisting in a variety of
biological functions. Depending on the requirement, Nitric Oxide can act
as a hormone, a neurotransmitter and an intracellular messenger.

Scientific Research on Nitric Oxide
There are three forms of Nitric Oxide:
NO1 – Produced by the body
NO2 – Inducible
NO3 – A poisonous gas

At this time three distinct Nitric Oxide Synthases (NOS) have been discovered falling into two categories:
Constitutive – endothelial and neuronal NOS.  These synthases are calcium dependent and can be driven by hormones in the body such as estrogen and progesterone (i.e. pregnancy).

Inducible – inducible NOS. This synthase is not calcium dependent and is driven when the immune system is attacked such in the case of an infection or injury.

Three NO Synthases:
Endothelial – known as eNOS.  This synthase signals the endothelial tissue of blood vessels to relax and dilate. (Constitutive)
Neuronal – known as nNOS. This synthase is a neurotransmitter and communicator between brain cells and can also signal eNOS. (Constitutive)
Inducible – known as iNOS.  This synthase is our immune system synthase. (Inducible)

Equine Science Solutions Products
Equine Science Solutions’ products only use endothelial NO and are ADNO formulated. ADNO therapy, Arginine Derived Nitric Oxide, uses Nitric Oxide per-curser to allow the body to produce its own Nitric Oxide via Nitric Oxide Synthases which converts Arginine to Nitric Oxide.

The research behind the Equine Science Solutions products is compelling. Each product in this line is designed to increase circulation to a targeted area in the body.

Here are several examples of Equine Science Solution formulas.
Colic Pro
Colic PRO will help soothe your horse’s stomach and relax his mind, getting him out of a stressful situation quickly.

  • Nutritional support for increased blood flow to the stomach lining
  • Increased mucus production to ease symptoms of colic and digestive disturbances
  • Herbs to relax the stomach muscles from spasming
  • Increased production of serotonin to help calm the horse

Gastroplus Pro
GastroPLUS PRO supplies condition specific nutrients and nitric oxide precursors to support the body’s healing of damaged gastric tissue for long term relief by increasing the horse’s natural production of mucus to protect the lining of the stomach and intestines.
When the body is triggered to produce more nitric oxide, the result is:

  • Increased blood flow
  • Support to healing of damaged gastric tissues
  • Stimulated production of protective mucus secretions
  • Counteracting drug related damage to the stomach lining.

Injury Pro
Injury PRO is designed to support the body’s own healing process. Its state of the art precursor and nutrient delivery system triggers the body to increase blood flow to the injured area as well as production of collagen to speed tissue repair.

Laminitis Plus
Laminitis Plus is useful after resolving Laminitis with Nitro PRO, this formula triggers the body to maintain blood flow to the hoof to reduce laminitic episodes. It also has condition specific nutrients needed to protect the horse from ulcers which often accompany the stress and pain of Laminitis. Condition specific nutrients are of all natural, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, herbs, hoof and coat conditioners and naturally occurring prebiotics to make this a full spectrum supplement formula.

Muscle Mass Plus
A deeply nourishing, powerful athletic super food, utilizing state of the art technology to provide condition specific nutrients, and sustained release nitric oxide (with the safety of network antioxidants) to high performance tissues. The PLUS added to the Muscle Mass PLUS formulas condition specific nutrients are a combination of all natural, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, herbs, hoof and coat conditioners and naturally occurring prebiotics of the highest quality to make this a powerful full spectrum supplement.

Nitro Pro
Nitro Pro offers a hard science approach to the treatment of Laminitis. Current research indicates that the lack of normal blood supply to the hoof is a major factor in the onset, reoccurrence, and failure of laminitis cases to heal. Nitro PRO triggers the production of nitric oxide to damaged tissues to increase blood flow, stimulate the development of new blood vessels and prevent capillary blockage.

I have been impressed with the results of using these products on several tough cases. The horses have accepted them well and the owners have reported noticeable changes.
